What is the difference between a medical rhinoplasty and a nose job?
Medical rhinoplasties and cosmetic rhinoplasties (commonly referred to as nose jobs) may end up with the same visible results, though each are performed for very different reasons.

Cosmetic rhinoplasties are performed on individuals who wish to change the shape or contours of their nose. They are purely aesthetic and sought by individuals who desire  more visually appealing nose.

Medical rhinoplasties on the other hand, may change the appearance of a patient’s nose, but are designed to change the function of the nose itself. In other words, they are sought by those whose noses are not functioning properly.

What are the medical reasons for a rhinoplasty?
There are a number of reasons why a patient will come to our Kirkland, WA office to have a medical rhinoplasty performed. Other patients may have been born with deformities or misshapen nasal passages which hinder proper breathing. Whatever your particular reason for seeking a medical rhinoplasty at NW Face Medical, we are happy to discuss how we can help you.

In general, the best candidates for medical rhinoplasty procedures are adults, as younger individuals are still developing. Individuals with breathing issues, deviated septums, chronic sinus problems, sleep disorders tied to breathing problems and those with nasal injuries can all be helped with a medical rhinoplasty procedure. How long does a medical rhinoplasty take?
Medical rhinoplasties at NW Face Medical are typically performed under general anesthesia in our office at Carillon Point in Kirkland, WA. Depending on the amount of work performed, the majority of medical rhinoplasties can be performed in under four hours. After your procedure, you will be taken to a recovery room as you awaken from anesthesia. Afterwards, your caregiver may take you home, or to nearby lodging if you have travelled from out of town.

What is the recovery time for a medical rhinoplasty?
The recovery time for a medical rhinoplasty is, by and large, going to be dictated by the amount of work necessary to cure your particular medical issues. Patients needing significant reconstruction are going to, expectedly, see longer recovery times than those needing less intensive surgeries. In addition, your general health and your body’s individual healing abilities are going to be factors in your recovery.

As a general rule, most patients are able to return to daily activities within two to three weeks. However, it is important to remember your nose will still be vulnerable and may still be sore for a longer period. During the entire time of your healing, it is important to avoid any activities which may increase the risk of impact to your face and nose.

After your operation, it is normal to experience some pain and swelling. Your doctor may prescribe medication to help with pain management. In time, these will subside as your body heals. Other frequently reported side effects include bleeding, stuffiness and headaches. These are all common, though you should call us if they do not begin to subside or if they worsen.

At a consultation at NW Face Medical we can discuss different treatment options for your particular condition and give you a better idea of what to expect in terms of recovery times.
